John Rieman

b. 28 September 1788, d. 14 October 1868
     John Rieman was born in Hausstette, Vechta, in Niedersachsen, Germany on 28 September 1788. He was baptized on 29 September 1788 in St. Vitus in Vestrup, Vechta, Niedersachsen, Germany. Godparents - Johan Herman Dunhovet and Anna Maria Kuisman.1 He was the son of Johan Herman Rieman and Anna Margaretha Dünhövet. His baptism name was John Herman Rieman. On Tuesday, 19 October 1813 in Bakum, in Vechta, Niedersachsen, Germany at age 25, John Rieman married Mary Elizabeth Schoene, age 26, daughter of Johan Heinrich Schoene and Anna Margaretha Schumacher. Witnesses - Herman Dünhövet and Caspar Nieman.2 John Rieman and Mary Elizabeth Schoeneemigrated in April 1832 from Vestrup, Niedersachsen, Germany. The ship bringing the family to the U.S. landed in Baltimore. They traveled from Baltimore to Pittsburg on foot following a four mule team hauling their baggage. From Pittsburg, they traveled by boat to Cincinnati.3 John Rieman signed an indenture agreement on 14 April 1832 in Bremen, Freie Hansestadt Bremen, Germany. John Herman Rieman signed an indenture agreement to his brother-in-law, Johan Frederick Rohenkohl, on 14 April 1832. "John Herman Reiman, his wife and four children are indentured to Mr. John Fred. Rohenkohl, for 80 Bremen dollars (64 Spanish dollars) at 5% interest." This was the cost of their passage from Bremen to Baltimore/Cincinnati.4 On 15 March 1837 in Ottawa Township, Putnam, Ohio, USA, he bought BLM record # 4340 Section 18, Township 1N Range 7E (Ottawa), W1/2 SW. in a 1st Principal deed from Lima, Ohio BLM. Land patent granted to John Herman Reiman of Cincinnati, Ohio for "the west half of the southwest quarter of section eighteen in township one north, of range seven east in the district of lands subject to sale in Lima, Ohio containing eighty acres". Farm was located "on the northwest edge of Ottawa township"..5 On 26 January 1843 in Ottawa Township, Putnam, Ohio, USA, he sold 80 acres, in section 18 of range one north, seven east (Ottawa Twnsp). to John Rieman, his son.6 John is the head of a family on the 3 September 1850 Census in Greensburg Township, in Putnam County, Ohio. Herman J. 60 and Mary E. 64 from Germany. Occupation = 'none'. Value of real estate = $500. They are living next door to their married daughter Mary Rieman Brinkman.7 John is the head of a family on the 16 June 1860 Census in Ottawa Township, in Putnam County, Ohio. Listed as John Rieman, 79, and his wife Mary, 81, value of property = $100.8 On 14 October 1868 John died in Ottawa, in Putnam Ohio, USA at age 80.9 He was buried on 16 October 1868 in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Glandorf, Ohio, USA.9
