Maté Berecz

b. 23 February 1782, d. 23 March 1857
1839 Mate Berecz
     Maté Berecz was born on 23 February 1782 in Pécs, Baranya, Hungary. He was baptized on 23 February 1782 in Belváros Parish, in Pécs, Baranya, Hungary.1 He was the son of András Berecz and Erzsébet Tóth. His baptism name was Andreas Mathias Berecz. They resided in Pécs, Baranya, Hungary. András Berecz purchased this property in 1786 for 433 sz (about $7300) and passed the title to his son in 1813. Mathias sold this property in 1838. The street is now called Papnövelde and is just inside the northern border of the old Pecs city wall..2 Between 1802 and 1857 Maté Berecz was employed as a tanner. His house and tannery were in #6 King Street in Pecs. According to family history he had 12 employees. On Tuesday, 10 October 1809 in Belváros Parish in Pécs, Baranya, Hungary, Maté Berecz married Agatha Jaksich, age 21, daughter of Lorinc Jaksich and Éva Schult. The marriage record reads "Mathias Borotz and Agatha Jakszits"..1 Matyas Berecz owned #6 Kossuth Lane, Pecs (this street was called Kiraly (King) Street in the 1900s.) This house was built before 1694 and in that year was transferred from the property of Mehemed Silistar, a Turkish aga, to Frigyes Krenner, the postmaster of Pecs. This house had three stories and 8 rooms. Matyas Berecz, a tanner, purchased the property from Ferenc Xaver Grill on September 23, 1822 for 13,000 forints and the exchange of another piece of property. In the 1856 land census the street is referred to as Fo (Main) Street. The property extended to Perczel Street #11 and had two or three floors below ground. The tannery was below ground in the #6 King Street property.2 Maté Berecz and Agatha Jaksich had 8 children between 1810 and 1824. All of the children were born in Pécs, Baranya, Hungary, Three of the children died in infancy. Maté died on 23 March 1857 in Pécs, Baranya, Hungary, at age 75. Cause of death = marasmus senilis (progressive wasting away of the body caused by old age.)
